First trip: Mexico City 4 nights as the base, then fly to one region, either Oaxaca 3–4 or the Yucatán (Mérida or the Caribbean coast) 4–6; fly between regions, not overnight buses.
Mexico is about 3,000 km long; Mexico City to Cancún is a two-hour flight or more than 20 hours on the road. Trips break when they chain beach, colonial towns and ruins with long bus rides. Mexico City sits at about 2,240 m, so take the first day easy. Safety differs sharply by state and even by road, so check official advice per region, move by day, and use registered taxis or ride-hailing.

Country rules
- Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
- Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
- Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
Etiquette
- Greet shop and restaurant staff with buenos días or buenas tardes before asking for anything.
- Dress modestly in churches; ask before photographing people, especially in indigenous communities.
- Meals run late; lunch (comida) is the main meal, around 14:00–16:00.
- Semana Santa (Easter week)
- Beaches and buses full; many offices close Thursday–Friday.
- Día de Muertos (Nov 1–2)
- Big crowds and high demand in Oaxaca, Michoacán and Mexico City.
- Hurricane season (June–November)
- Storms can close Caribbean and Pacific resorts and cancel flights.
- Christmas–New Year
- Peak season on the coasts; book well ahead.
Money & passes
Cash necessity: 3/5
- Currency is the Mexican peso (MXN, $). Cards work in hotels, chains and many restaurants; markets, street food, small shops and colectivos are cash.
- Use bank ATMs inside branches or malls, and choose to be charged in pesos, not your home currency.
- Tip about 10–15% in sit-down restaurants.

Safety
- Emergency: 911.
- Taxis: use ride-hailing apps or authorised airport and site taxis (pay at the booth); do not hail cabs on the street at night.
- The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of several states (including areas of Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima, Guerrero and Chiapas): read the state-by-state detail before planning road trips.
- Drive only by day and on toll highways (cuota) where possible.
- Earthquakes: learn the exits in your hotel in Mexico City; public alarms sound before strong quakes.
- Swim only where lifeguards are posted; Pacific currents are strong.
Mexico connects by short flights to the US and Central America; Cancún is the natural start for Belize and Guatemala by land or air.
