Valle de Bravo is a lakeside town in Mexico State at about 1,800 m, roughly 150 km west of Mexico City. The lake, the paragliding launch at El Peñón and the Monarch butterfly sanctuary at Piedra Herrada are the reasons to come. It is a weekend resort for Mexico City, so midweek is cheaper and quieter; two nights covers the town, one activity and one nature half-day.

Watch out

Safety

Valle de Bravo is a small resort town and generally calm for visitors; the real risks are weekend traffic on the Toluca road, altitude on the sanctuary hike, and unlicensed activity operators — book through established outfitters and confirm the price before you go.
  • Weekends and holidays: rooms sell out and rates jump — book ahead or come midweek.
  • Afternoon rain June–September; plan outdoor activities for the morning.
  • Piedra Herrada is seasonal: the butterflies are there roughly late December to February, and the site closes outside that window.
  • The sanctuary hike is about an hour uphill at altitude; go early and take water.
  • Altitude about 1,800 (≈ US$100) m: take the first day easy if you came straight from sea level.
