Antarctica is an expedition, not a destination you plan yourself: book a ship or fly-cruise with an IAATO operator for the November–March season, and build two buffer days at each end for weather.

There are no hotels, no public transport and no independent entry in practice: nearly every visitor arrives on an expedition ship from Ushuaia (Argentina) or on a fly-cruise from Punta Arenas (Chile). The trip is decided by three things you do not control — the Drake Passage, the weather window for landings, and the operator's itinerary — so the planning work is the gateway city, the buffer days and the insurance.

Friction everywhere

  • Access is only through licensed operators; activities follow the Antarctic Treaty system and IAATO visitor guidelines, and your operator handles the permits.
  • Weather decides every landing and every flight: plan two buffer nights in Ushuaia or Punta Arenas before and after.
  • Travel insurance must cover emergency medical evacuation from Antarctica; many standard policies do not.
  • Biosecurity: clothing, boots and bags are cleaned and inspected before landings to avoid carrying seeds and soil.
  • The Drake Passage can be very rough; bring seasickness medication and ask a doctor in advance.
