The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic; Argentina also claims sovereignty, and the islands set their own entry rules. Access is the whole planning problem: few scheduled flights, small inter-island planes and lodges with only a handful of rooms. Book flights, inter-island transport and lodges as one package, go in the southern summer (roughly October–March) for penguins and seabirds, and drive on the left.

  • Entry rules are set by the Falkland Islands Government, not the UK: visitors typically need a return ticket, pre-booked accommodation and adequate insurance. Check the official rules for your passport.
  • Keep your distance from penguins and seals, stay out of marked colonies, and follow landowners' rules: most land is privately owned farmland.

Etiquette

  • Always ask permission before crossing farmland and close gates behind you.
  • Keep at least a few metres from wildlife and never block penguins' paths to the sea.
  • The sovereignty question is sensitive: be respectful in conversation.

  • Currency is the Falkland Islands pound (FKP), at par with the British pound; UK sterling notes are accepted. Falklands notes are not usable outside the islands.
  • Cards work in Stanley's larger businesses; bring some cash for camps and small shops.
  • Most lodges and transport are prepaid through the booking agent.

Safety

  • Driving is on the left; outside Stanley most roads are gravel tracks, and off-road driving needs care and local advice.
  • Wind and cold: even in summer, carry waterproofs and warm layers.
  • The islands were declared free of landmines in 2020, but respect any remaining warning signs and local guidance on old military sites.
  • Medical facilities are limited to Stanley; serious cases need evacuation, so carry insurance that covers it.

The Falklands connect by air to southern Chile and the UK, and are a common stop on Antarctic and South Georgia cruises.
