The cover you need

  • Emergency medical

    Essential

Look for: US$250,000 or more is a common minimum; more is cheap to add(check)

    • Medical bills abroad are the cost most likely to be ruinous; this is the reason to buy a policy.
  • Evacuation and repatriation

    Essential

Look for: US$100,000 or more, or included in full(check)

    • An air ambulance or a medically escorted flight home can cost tens of thousands, far more from remote places.
  • Cancellation and cutting the trip short

    Consider

    Look for: Low

    • You have no non-refundable bookings, so there is little to cancel; this can be the smallest part of the policy.
    • Buy the policy when you pay the first deposit, so cancellation cover starts then.
  • Baggage, gadgets and valuables

    Consider

    Look for: Standard baggage cover

    • Check your home contents insurance first: it may already cover gadgets away from home, often more cheaply.
    • Theft from an unattended bag, a car or a beach is often excluded; report thefts to the police within 24 hours and keep the report.
  • Personal liability

    Consider

Look for: Usually included; check the limit(check)

    • Pays if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. What is the medical limit, and does it include hospital, doctors, surgery and medicines abroad?
  2. Is emergency evacuation and repatriation included, to your home country and not only to the nearest hospital?
  3. What is the excess (deductible) per claim, and does it apply per person or per incident?
  4. Is there a 24-hour assistance line, and must you call it before treatment for the claim to count?
  5. Is there cover if the government advises against travel to the destination after you book?
