Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL, via the Overpass API. Volunteers map these; some are missing or out of date. Missions are matched by the country=* tag, else by the name; opening hours and phone numbers are shown only where mapped. Check the embassy's own page before you go: many need an appointment. Missing one? Add it to the map.
What an embassy can do
- Issue an emergency travel document (or a new passport) when yours is lost or stolen
- Give you a list of local lawyers, doctors, interpreters and funeral directors
- Visit or contact you if you are arrested, and check you are treated fairly
- Contact family or friends for you, and help them send you money
- Help in a crisis: natural disaster, unrest, evacuation information
- Help after a serious crime, a death abroad or a hospital admission (contacts, not costs)
What it cannot do
- Pay your bills, fines, hospital costs or a ticket home (some lend in real emergencies, repaid later: check)
- Get you out of jail or interfere with local courts and police
- Give legal advice or act as your lawyer
- Replace a lost visa for the country you are in (that is the local immigration office)
- Search for lost property, or book hotels and flights for you
Honorary consuls are volunteers: they can advise and pass messages on, but often cannot issue passports.
