Ixtlán del Rio is a small inland town in southern Nayarit, on the Guadalajara–Tepic highway, and the only place in the state with a pre-Hispanic archaeological zone: Los Toriles, with its round Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl mound and shaft-tomb finds. It is a half-day stop — ruins, a plaza, a hilltop chapel — not a beach destination. Most travellers pass through between Guadalajara and Tepic, or sleep one night on the way to the coast.

Getting around

The town is small and flat: walk everywhere in the centre, 10–20 min between plaza, church and bus stops. Taxis wait at a sitio across from the Zócalo; short hops are cheap. Los Toriles is about 3 km east of the centre — taxi or drive, not a pleasant walk along the highway.

Watch out

Safety

The town centre is calm and walkable by day; the real risks are the highway at night, summer heat and unlit side streets after dark. Use 911 for anything urgent.
  • Los Toriles is an INAH site with limited signage and few facilities: bring water, hat and cash.
  • The ruins close in the early afternoon — plan the visit for the morning.
  • Highway MEX-15D is a toll road; free roads are slower and less safe at night.
  • Summer is hot and wet; afternoon storms are common Jun–Sep.
