Guadalajara is Mexico's second city and the capital of Jalisco, about 5.2 million people in the metro area. The Centro Histórico is walkable in a morning; the real draw is the craft suburbs of Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, the Orozco murals, and tequila country an hour away. Three nights covers it without rushing.

Getting around

The Centro is walkable (most sights sit in a 1 km by 350 m grid). Mi Tren light rail, Mi Macro BRT and green/red Mi Transporte buses cost M$9.50 a ride (2026 estimate, check); buy a transport card at a station machine. Uber, Cabify and Didi cover the city. Taxis: agree the fare first, and expect roughly double at night.

Watch out

Safety

Central Guadalajara is fine by day and busy at night; the risks are petty theft in markets, taxi overcharging, and the blocks around the Central Vieja bus station after dark. Use Uber there.
  • Use Uber or a taxi to and from the Central Vieja bus station; the surrounding blocks are considered risky for visitors.
  • Summer afternoons bring heavy rain from June to September; plan indoor sights then.
  • Ask the taxi fare before you get in, and check the meter is on if you agree to use it.
  • Some bars and clubs on Chapultepec add a cover or a minimum; ask before you sit.
