TlaxcalaTlaxcala de Xicohténcatl

Base in Tlaxcala 2 nights for the compact colonial centre and Cacaxtla; add Huamantla only if you are there for the August fair.

Tlaxcala is a small highland capital at about 2,240 m, with a colonial centre you can walk in an afternoon and the Cacaxtla murals 30–40 min away. Most travellers pass through between Puebla and Mexico City; two nights is enough to see the centre, the monastery and one archaeological site without rushing. It is not a resort town: nights are quiet, English is limited and the reward is low prices and almost no crowds.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. For the bus terminal, the zoo or outlying hotels, use taxis or ride-hailing; agree the fare or check the meter before you get in. Buses from the central terminal reach Puebla, Apizaco, Huamantla and Mexico City's TAPO.

Watch out

Safety

Tlaxcala is calmer than most Mexican state capitals, and the centre is fine on foot in daylight. Use taxis after dark, keep to lit streets, carry only what you need and treat the bus terminal area as a normal city edge, not a place to linger.
  • Altitude about 2,240 m: the first day is for walking, not for a long hike.
  • Afternoon rain from June to September; carry a light shell.
  • Few staff speak English outside hotels; keep addresses written down.
  • Late-night taxis are scarce in the centre: fix a return time or save a local number.
  • Carnival and the Feria de Todos Santos fill hotels: book weeks ahead.
