Hecelchakán is a compact Maya town of about 9,400 people on the Campeche–Mérida corridor, now a Tren Maya station. Its draw is not the town square but what sits around it: the Xcalumkin ruins 12 km east and the mangrove wetlands of Los Petenes and Ría Celestún, both reachable only with a local guide or boat. Lodging is thin and basic, so most travellers pass through in a half-day or sleep one night.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable; even-numbered streets run north–south, odd numbers east–west. Moto-taxis are the cheap local hop, regular taxis handle day trips and groups (taxi sitio at Calle 20 and Calle 21), and combis on Calle 20 near the Zócalo serve nearby towns.

Watch out

Safety

Hecelchakán is a quiet town and the usual risks are practical: heat, unlit rural roads after dark, and no posted prices for informal taxis or guides. Agree the fare before you get in.
  • Lodging is limited and basic: book the hacienda or a Campeche hotel if comfort matters.
  • Xcalumkin and the wetlands have no public transport: agree the fare and waiting time with a driver first.
  • Afternoon sun on the Zócalo is strong; there is little shade.
  • Cell signal drops in the Petenes reserve and rural roads.
