Rio Lagartos is a fishing village on the north Yucatán coast, about 2.5 h by car from Mérida and 3 h from Cancún. It exists for one thing: the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, a 227,000-hectare mangrove and lagoon system with hundreds of bird species, flamingo colonies and crocodiles. Las Coloradas, the pink salt pools, are 20–25 km east. One full day covers a dawn boat tour and the pools; two nights let you add a beach afternoon and a second tour at a different tide.

Safety
- Agree the boat price, route and duration before boarding; it is per boat, not per person, and a tip at the end is normal.
- Las Coloradas is an active salt works: stay on the marked paths and check whether swimming is allowed before you go in.
- Cell signal drops to 3G or nothing inside the reserve; download maps and your booking details first.
- Mosquitoes are heavy around the mangroves at dawn and dusk — repellent and long sleeves help.
- Bring cash: ATMs are scarce and card acceptance is limited outside the larger hotels.
