Tlayacapan is a small Morelos town of about 7,000 people, an hour and a half to two and a half hours from Mexico City by bus, and one of Mexico's Pueblos Magicos. Its Augustinian monastery and surviving 16th-century chapels are part of the UNESCO listing for the monasteries on the slopes of Popocatepetl. It is a walking town: you come for the monastery, the chapels, the chinelos tradition and a temazcal, not for nightlife or a beach.

Getting around

The centre is compact and flat enough to walk; taxis cover the chapels and outlying inns. Buses from Mexico City's Taxqueña terminal and from Cuernavaca are the usual way in. A car helps for the surrounding towns but is not needed inside Tlayacapan.

Watch out

Safety

Tlayacapan is a small, calm town and the centre is safe to walk by day and early evening. The real issues are uneven pavements, occasional earthquake damage to old buildings, and drinking pulque on an empty stomach: keep to lit streets after dark and use taxis for outlying inns.
  • The monastery church was damaged in the 2017 earthquake and has been closed for restoration at times: check locally before you plan around the interior.
  • Temazcal sessions usually need a group of 5–6 and a week's notice: book ahead.
  • Weekend afternoons bring Mexico City day-trippers; the plaza and pulque bars fill up.
  • Summer rain falls in short afternoon bursts; carry a light rain jacket Jun–Sep.
  • Some pulque bars and pozole spots open weekends only: check hours before you walk over.
