Ciudad Valles is the practical base for the Huasteca Potosina, a lowland city at about 1,800 m on the road between San Luis Potosí and Tampico. The waterfalls, the Tampaón river and the Tamtoc site sit 18–60 km out, so you sleep here and day-trip out. Two nights covers Micos and Tamul; three adds Tamasopo or Xilitla.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; taxis are the way to reach the bus station and the highway hotels. For the waterfalls there is no useful public transport: book a tour or hire a car. Grupo Vencedor and Frontera run the regional buses.

Watch out

Safety

Ciudad Valles is a working city, not a resort: the centre is fine by day and early evening, use taxis after dark, and keep to the highway strip or the centre at night. The bigger risks are the heat, the river and unlicensed tours.
  • Waterfall access depends on river level: Tamul is easiest in the low-water season, roughly Jul–Oct, and boat trips can be cancelled after heavy rain.
  • Tours to Tamul and Micos often leave at 7–8am and return after dark; agree the price and what is included before you get in.
  • Swimming spots have no lifeguards and slippery limestone; do not jump into water you cannot see the bottom of.
  • Bring cash: smaller falls, parking and village food stalls may not take cards.
