Bacalar is a small lakeside town on the Laguna de los Siete Colores in southern Quintana Roo, about 40 km north of Chetumal and 210 km south of Tulum. It is a slow stop: swimming, kayaking, sailing and cenotes, not a resort strip. Two nights covers the lagoon and the fort without rushing; three if you add the nearby Maya ruins or Los Rápidos. The town is compact and walkable, buses and the Tren Maya connect it to the rest of the Yucatán, and costs are lower than Tulum or Cancún.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end; bicycles and taxis cover the rest and taxis are cheap. Colectivos and buses run along Highway 307 to Chetumal and Tulum. The ADO bus station sits about 1 km northwest of the centre on Highway 307, and the Tren Maya station is on Avenida Tajma Ha, both a short taxi ride from the Zócalo.

Watch out

Safety

Bacalar is a small, calm town and generally safe for tourists; the real risks are petty theft from unguarded lagoon gear, unlit roads and paths at night, and cash problems from broken ATMs. Use 911 for emergencies and 078 for tourist help.
  • Water activities on the lagoon are reported closed on Wednesdays — check locally before planning a boat, kayak or swim day.
  • ATMs in the centre are often out of service and some charge high withdrawal fees; carry cash and use bank ATMs in daylight.
  • Los Rápidos is a paid, busy site with mediocre food and service — go early or skip it.
  • Sargassum and heavy rain can cloud the lagoon in the wet season; check conditions before booking a boat tour.
  • Swim with reef-safe sunscreen only; stromatolites are fragile and touching them is not allowed.
