Tulum is three separate places about 3 km apart: the pueblo on Highway 307 with buses, banks and cheap beds; the beach road (zona hotelera) with the expensive hotels and nightlife; and the ruins, reached by a 1.6 km access road. You cannot walk between them comfortably, so pick one base and use taxis, colectivos or a bike. The ruins are the third most-visited archaeological site in Mexico and fill up from about 10:00, so go at opening.

Getting around

Walking works inside the pueblo only. Between pueblo, beach and ruins use taxis (pueblo to beach about M$100–200; pueblo to ruins M$100–300), colectivo vans (about M$30 to the ruins, M$25–50 along Highway 307), or a rented bike (about M$100–250 per 24 h). ADO and Mayab buses cover the region; Tren Maya links Tulum with Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Bacalar and the airport. Renting a car makes sense for cenotes and Sian Ka'an.

Tulum Pueblo (El Pueblo)

On Highway 307, about 3 km from the beach. Hostels, budget inns, supermarkets, two bus stations, banks and most restaurants. Best value and the only place with real local life.

Zona hotelera, north end

Quieter beach-road stretch with boutique and eco hotels; still a taxi or bike ride from town.

Zona hotelera, south end

Restaurants, bars and the party scene; busiest and most expensive, and most places stay closed until the afternoon.

Tulum Ruinas strip

The access road to the ruins: mid-range hotels, restaurants and a part-time bus stop, handy for an early ruins visit.

Watch out

Safety

Tulum is generally safe for tourists in the pueblo and hotel zone, but the main annoyances are aggressive sales on the ruins access road, taxi price games and beach-road nightlife. Keep to lit streets at night, use registered taxis or ride apps, and carry pesos.
  • The ruins need two tickets: a national-park bracelet plus the INAH site ticket. Buy both or you cannot enter.
  • No disposable plastic, no smoking items and no bags at the ruins; the bag check line is long, so travel light.
  • Private parking touts on the ruins access road flag down cars and sell overpriced shuttles; the walk is flat and short.
  • Parking on the side road is ticketed and plates can be removed; use a paid lot.
  • Beach-road hotels are eco-run: power may cut after midnight, and toilet paper goes in the bin, not the toilet.
  • Pay in pesos. Taxi and vendor prices rise if you only carry US dollars.
  • Check the last colectivo and bus times before heading out; service thins in the evening.
