Mazatlán is a working Pacific port of about 500,000 people with two visitor districts: the restored Centro Histórico around Plaza Machado, and the Zona Dorada beach strip 6 km north. It is cheaper than Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta and has a longer dry season, roughly November to June. Most trips need three nights; two is enough for a beach break, four if you add sport fishing or Islas Marías.

Getting around

Centro Histórico is walkable. Between centre and Zona Dorada use the green Sabalo-Centro buses along the Malecón (about M$9) or a pulmonía (open-topped taxi): agree the price before you get in, expect to bargain. Uber operates and is usually cheaper than a pulmonía. Taxis are the only option late at night.

Watch out

Safety

Mazatlán is a normal working city and the tourist districts are busy and well used. The real risks are Pacific surf and undertow, unlicensed taxis at night, and heat in summer. Use Uber or hotel taxis after dark and keep valuables out of sight on the beach.
  • Agree pulmonía and taxi fares before boarding; the first quote is often high.
  • Semana Santa and Easter week fill every beach and hotel — book months ahead or avoid.
  • Swim with care: Pacific surf and undertow at unpatrolled beaches; stick to flagged areas.
  • Summer heat and humidity from July to September; hydrate and use shade at midday.
  • Hurricane season runs roughly June to November; check forecasts if travelling then.
