Safety

  • Crime is concentrated in parts of Belize City: transit through rather than staying, and use taxis at night.
  • Hurricanes (June–November): follow local warnings and evacuation orders on the cayes.
  • Sun, heat and insects: use sunscreen and repellent; dengue occurs.
  • Cave tours (such as ATM) require a licensed guide and involve swimming and climbing.

Belize connects overland to Guatemala (Tikal) and Mexico (Chetumal), and by boat to Mexico from the cayes.
