First trip: fly straight to the Bay Islands (Roatán or Utila, 4–6 nights) for diving, and add Copán Ruinas 2 nights via the Guatemala side or San Pedro Sula by day; avoid overnight stays in the big cities.
Honduras has the Bay Islands' reef and the Maya site of Copán, but its large cities have high violent-crime rates. Trips break when they route through San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa by bus and at night. Fly directly to Roatán where possible, reach Copán from Guatemala or by daytime shuttle, and keep to established tourist areas.

Country rules
- Check entry rules for your passport with Honduras's migration authority or a Honduran consulate; the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua can make your permitted stay count across all four.
- Transit San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa by day and with pre-arranged transport; do not use public buses between cities.

Safety
- Violent crime rates are high in San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and La Ceiba: avoid walking at night and use pre-booked transport.
- Choose dive shops with good safety records and check equipment.
- Hurricanes and tropical storms (June–November) can affect the islands and the north coast.
- The Mosquitia region in the east is remote with limited services and some drug-trafficking activity; go only with specialist operators.
