El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America; the airport, the surf coast, San Salvador and the volcanoes are all within about two hours of each other. Trips break less on distance than on rules: a state of exception has been in force since 2022, with heavy police and military presence and checkpoints. Carry ID, follow instructions at checkpoints, and pick one or two bases rather than moving daily.

Country rules
- Check entry rules for your passport with El Salvador's migration authority or a Salvadoran consulate; the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua can make your permitted stay count across all four.
- A state of exception has been in force since 2022, suspending some legal protections: carry your passport or a copy, cooperate at checkpoints and avoid photographing police, military or prisons.

Safety
- Security has changed a lot in recent years, but follow official advice and avoid isolated areas after dark.
- Police and military checkpoints are common: stay calm, carry ID and follow instructions.
- Earthquakes and volcanic activity occur; know your hotel's exits.
- Rip currents and big surf: swim only in calm areas and ask locals.
El Salvador is an Avianca hub for Central America; shuttles run to Guatemala and Honduras.
