San Salvador lies in a volcanic valley and spreads across long avenues. The historic centre, with the cathedral, the National Palace and the National Theatre, is compact but busy and best seen on a weekday morning. The hotels, restaurants and museums are in the western districts, 15–30 minutes away by car. The trips that go wrong are the ones that walk between districts, arrive late without a booked car, or plan the centre for a Sunday when many places close. Four clusters cover a first visit; Suchitoto, the volcano and the coast are trips away from one kept bed.
