  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Tecolutla is a small Gulf coast beach town in Veracruz state, about 190 km north of Veracruz city and the northern end of the so-called Emerald Coast corridor. It is the nearest beach to Mexico City, roughly a four- to five-hour drive, which is why it fills up at Christmas, Easter and during the May fishing tournament and is quiet the rest of the year. The draw is 15 km of gentle, warm-water beach plus river, estuary and mangrove boat trips, not nightlife or big resorts. Two nights covers the beach, a mangrove panguita ride and El Tajín as a day trip; one night is enough if you are passing between Poza Rica and the coast.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The downtown core is small and walkable. For the beaches, river mouth and outlying hotels, use taxis or local transport; distances along the 15 km of beach are too long to walk comfortably in the heat.

Watch out

Safety

Generally a safe, low-key beach town with friendly locals; the real risks are unattended belongings on the beach, night camping, and sudden nortes weather in winter.
  • Nortes (cold fronts) from December to February can drop temperatures and bring strong wind with little warning.
  • Do not leave possessions unattended on the beach.
  • Camping on the beach at night is not recommended.
  • Little English is spoken; have basic Spanish or a translation app ready.
  • Book ahead for Semana Santa, Christmas–New Year and the May fishing tournament; outside those dates you can usually arrive and find a room.
