Tecolutla
Go for 2 nights if you want the closest Gulf beach to Mexico City; skip in Dec–Feb if cold fronts (nortes) would ruin a beach-only trip.
Tecolutla is a small Gulf coast beach town in Veracruz state, about 190 km north of Veracruz city and the northern end of the so-called Emerald Coast corridor. It is the nearest beach to Mexico City, roughly a four- to five-hour drive, which is why it fills up at Christmas, Easter and during the May fishing tournament and is quiet the rest of the year. The draw is 15 km of gentle, warm-water beach plus river, estuary and mangrove boat trips, not nightlife or big resorts. Two nights covers the beach, a mangrove panguita ride and El Tajín as a day trip; one night is enough if you are passing between Poza Rica and the coast.
