Nogales is a border city of about 260,000 people where the US line runs down the middle of International Street. Almost everyone arrives on foot from Nogales, Arizona, spends the day in the Centro for pharmacies, dentists, handicrafts and Sonoran food, and walks back before the US crossing queues build. It is not a sightseeing city: the value is price, proximity and a different country in ten minutes.

Getting around

The Centro is walkable and most day-trippers never use a vehicle. Taxis and ride-hailing cover the highway hotels and the industrial zone; agree the fare or check the app price before you get in. Local buses run along the main avenues but are of little use to a short-stay visitor. Driving in from Arizona means Mexican auto insurance, a vehicle permit if you go beyond the border zone, and long waits to cross back.

Watch out

Safety

The Centro is busy and fine by day; the real risks are the US re-entry queue, night driving on Highway 15D, and anything to do with prescription or controlled drugs. Keep to lit streets after dark and carry only what you need.
  • Crossing back to the US can take over two hours at peak times; walk back earlier than you think you need to.
  • Carry your passport, passport card or green card — you need it to re-enter the US.
  • Never carry firearms, live or spent ammunition or knives across the border; even a pocket knife can mean jail.
  • Buying prescription medicine to take into the US without valid documentation risks confiscation or arrest.
  • Never buy controlled drugs such as Valium or Vicodin from a clinic or pharmacy without legal US and Mexican prescriptions.
  • Do not drive Federal Highway 15D between Nogales and Hermosillo at night, and avoid it alone.
  • Monsoon season brings flash flooding; keep an eye on the weather.
  • Do not flash cash or cards, and avoid empty streets at night.
  • Prices are in pesos but often written with the same $ sign as the dollar — ask which currency before you pay.
  • Most merchants prefer US paper money; carry small bills and enough cash, as cards are not accepted everywhere.
