  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Nogales sits on the US–Mexico line, 100 km south of Tucson down I-19, and the border runs through the middle of town. The Arizona side is a small, walkable historic core of early-1900s storefronts, one good regional museum and a working port of entry. Almost nobody needs more than a night here, and many travellers use it only to park and walk across.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The historic core and the pedestrian border crossing are walkable in 10–15 minutes. Everything else — Ruby, Peña Blanca Lake, Tumacácori, Rio Rico — needs a car; rental desks are on Grand Avenue and Mariposa Road. I-19 is the only fast road north to Tucson.

Arizona 82 east, about 45 min by car

Birding and a small lake; go early, the road is slow.

Ruby ghost town

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Ruby Road west from I-19, partly unpaved but usually fine in dry weather

Private land, resident caretaker, limited days and an entry fee — check before driving; do not attempt in rain.

Tucsonovernight

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

I-19 north, about 100 km

Too far for a casual return day; use it as your arrival or departure base.

Heroica Nogales, Sonora

caution

Door to door: 5–10 min on foot

Walk across the pedestrian crossing at the end of Morley Avenue

Daylight only, passport in hand, check the current advisory; queues at the return crossing can run 30–90 min.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Grand Avenue and the historic core

Walk to Morley Avenue, the museum and the pedestrian border crossing; small inns and older motels.

Mariposa Road / Frank Reed Road

Chain hotels near the truck route and the commercial crossing; free parking, but you need a car for everything.

Rio Rico (north of town)

Quieter, cheaper, 15–20 min up I-19; good if you are driving onward to Tucson or Patagonia.

Watch out

Safety

The Arizona side is a small, quiet town and normal precautions cover it. The real risk sits on the Mexican side of the line: check the current US advisory for Sonora, cross on foot in daylight, and keep phones and jewellery out of sight.
  • Crossing into Sonora: check the current US State Department advisory for Sonora before you go, travel by day, stay on the main toll road (México 15) and keep valuables out of sight.
  • US citizens need a passport or passport card to re-enter; other nationalities need the right US entry document — check before you cross.
  • Summer heat and monsoon storms: June–September afternoons are punishing and flash flooding closes dirt roads.
  • The Mexican side is a separate city (Heroica Nogales) with its own rules, currency and phone network — your US plan may not cover it.
