Jogindernagar is a small Himachal town on NH 20 in Mandi district, known as the City of Powerhouses: three hydel stations run off the same Uhl river stream. It is a practical base, not a sight in itself — the draws are Barot, the Kangra Valley narrow-gauge railhead, the Shanan haulage trolley and Machyal Lake. Two nights covers the town and Barot; one night if you only ride the train or the trolley.

Getting around

The town is walkable: bus stand to railway platform and Billing Complex is under 1 km. For Barot, Machyal Lake, Baijnath and Jhatingri use local buses, shared taxis or a hired car — the Barot road is single-lane for long stretches. No ride-hailing apps; agree the fare before you get in.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime small town; the real risks are hill roads, monsoon landslides, the single-lane Barot stretch and unlicensed angling or paragliding. Carry cash, keep a torch and check road status after rain.
  • The Shanan haulage trolley needs written permission from the powerhouse authority — outsiders are not allowed on it without it.
  • Barot and Jhatingri roads are single-lane with hill traffic; avoid them after dark and in heavy rain.
  • Angling at Barot is illegal without a licence from the Fishery Farm Office.
  • Fishing at Machyal Lake is banned; the fish are fed and worshipped.
  • Alcohol is not sold or drunk in public here.
  • ATMs are few and can be empty or offline: carry cash.
