Subregion
South Asia
Pick one country and one or two regions of it — north India's Delhi–Agra–Jaipur triangle, the Kathmandu Valley plus one trek, or a Sri Lanka loop — and fly the long legs. Combine two countries only on a real overland line: Varanasi → Nepal, or Delhi → Kathmandu → Bhutan by air.
Start from what you want
Most complete right now
All 7 →South Asia is a subcontinent, not a circuit. India alone is larger than the European Union, and a Delhi–Goa–Kerala loop is three different climates and two flights. The trips that fail try to see "India and Nepal" in twelve days, ride overnight buses to save a hotel night, or land in Kerala in the monsoon. Decide the season first — the monsoon and the pre-monsoon heat rule the calendar — then pick one region with one base and day trips. Add a second country only where a border or a short flight makes it natural.

Entry & visas across the region
Tiers below are for most EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian passports in 2026. South Asia runs mostly on e-visas and on-arrival visas with fees; lookalike 'visa agent' sites are a bigger trap here than anywhere else in Asia.
| Country | Most Western passports | Stay | Arrival form / fee | Watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India | e-visae-Tourist visa: 30-day, 1-year or 5-year options by passport | 30 days to 90 days per visit by option | e-Arrival card online before arrival (check) | Apply at least 4 days ahead on the official site only; the printed approval and passport must match exactly. official ↗ |
| Nepal | on arrivalVisa on arrival at Kathmandu airport and main land borders; online form beforehand | 15, 30 or 90 days | Online arrival form within 15 days before arrival | Fee in US dollars cash or card at the airport desk; trekking in national parks needs a licensed guide. official ↗ |
| Sri Lanka | e-visaETA online; fee waived for a listed set of countries at times — check | 30 days, extendable | Arrival card (digital option) — check | The ETA system and its fee changed several times in 2024–25; use only the government site. official ↗ |
| Bhutan | e-visaVisa online via the official portal or a licensed operator; Sustainable Development Fee per night | Days paid | Visa clearance printed for the flight | SDF is US$100 per adult per night (halved until 2027 — check); Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian nationals pay a lower rupee rate. official ↗ |
| Maldives | on arrivalFree visa on arrival for all nationalities with a booking and onward ticket | 30 days | IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 h before arrival | Guesthouse or resort confirmation is checked at the desk. official ↗ |
| Bangladesh | on arrivalVisa on arrival at Dhaka airport for many passports; e-visa or embassy for others | 30 days | None beyond the arrival card | On-arrival terms tightened and loosened during 2024–25 political changes — check. official ↗ |
| Pakistan | advisoryE-visa exists; many governments advise against travel to large areas | – | – | See the Pakistan page before anything else. |
- Nepal's Kathmandu and Pokhara airports and Delhi's IGI are the easy doors; land borders take a full day each way including paperwork.
- Indian nationals do not need a visa for Nepal or Bhutan (Bhutan permit still needed); Western visitors in Bhutan must travel with a licensed guide outside Thimphu and Paro.
- Permits: Inner Line / Protected Area permits for parts of India's north-east, Sikkim, Ladakh and the Andamans; TIMS and park permits in Nepal; Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh.
- Keep at least two blank passport pages: Nepal and Bhutan visas are full-page stickers in some cases.

Money
| Country | Currency | Cash reality |
|---|---|---|
| India | INR (rupee) | UPI QR everywhere; visitors can use prepaid UPI wallets sold at some airports (check). Cards in hotels and malls; cash for rickshaws and stalls. |
| Nepal | NPR (rupee) | Cash on treks — no ATMs above the trailhead towns. Indian rupee notes are accepted in some places; large notes can be refused. |
| Sri Lanka | LKR (rupee) | Cards in hotels; cash for tuk-tuks, trains and small cafés. |
| Bhutan | BTN (ngultrum) | Pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee; most costs are prepaid with the tour and SDF. |
| Maldives | MVR (rufiyaa) | Resorts bill in US dollars; local islands accept dollars and rufiyaa. Resort service charge and taxes add about a quarter to prices. |
| Bangladesh | BDT (taka) | Cash economy; foreign cards work at a few bank ATMs and big hotels. |
- Cost per day in the table above (2026 estimate): backpacker = guesthouse, local food, trains and buses; comfort = 3–4★ hotel, sit-down meals, private car and driver.
- India's ₹2,000 notes are withdrawn; ATMs cap foreign withdrawals low — expect several fees.
- Tipping: drivers and guides expect it in India, Nepal and Bhutan; 10% service is often already on restaurant bills.
- Bhutan's SDF and Maldives resort prices dominate budgets; everything else in the region is among the cheapest travel in Asia.
Stay safe
Drug laws
Cannabis and charas are visible in parts of India and Nepal, but possession is a criminal offence everywhere in South Asia, with long pre-trial detention.

|---|---|---|
| India | Death for repeat large-quantity trafficking (NDPS Act) | Bail is hard to get; cases take years. 'Bhang' shops in some states do not make other forms legal. |
| Sri Lanka | Death (not carried out since 1976) | Strict enforcement at Colombo airport. |
| Bangladesh | Death | Includes methamphetamine (yaba) offences. |
| Maldives | Life imprisonment (death penalty in law) | Alcohol and pork only on resort islands; importing alcohol is an offence. |
| Nepal | Up to life imprisonment | Cannabis is illegal despite its open sale in Thamel. |
| Bhutan | Long prison terms | Tobacco is taxed and restricted; declare what you bring. |
| Pakistan | Death | See advisory. |
Safety hotspots
| Where | Risk | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistanadvisory | Terrorism; several provinces and border areas under against-all-travel advice. | No trip line. Read your government advice first. |
| Jammu and Kashmir, India–Pakistan border areas | Militant attacks (Pahalgam, April 2025) and cross-border strikes. | Most governments advise against travel outside Ladakh; check your government's map. |
| Manipur and parts of north-east India | Ethnic violence since 2023; curfews and internet cuts. | Check permits and advice; avoid unless you know the current situation. |
| Chittagong Hill Tracts | Restricted area; armed groups. | Permit and approved operator only. |
| Nepal treks and mountain roads | Altitude, landslides, avalanches; road crashes in the monsoon. | Licensed guide (required in national parks); insurance covering helicopter rescue to 6,000 m. |
| Road travel across the region | Highest road death rates in Asia; night buses crash. | Trains or flights for long legs; no night road travel in the hills. |
| Women travelling alone | Harassment and staring in crowds; assaults reported. | Women-only train carriages and metro coaches; ride-hailing with shared trip status; dress conservatively outside resorts. |
| Scams at arrival points | 'Your hotel is closed' taxis, fake tourist offices near stations. | Prepaid taxi booths or ride-hailing; book trains on the official site. |

South Asia — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives — holds about a quarter of humanity on a landmass walled off by the Himalaya and ruled by the monsoon. The five chapters below follow the layers that shape a visit: ancient civilisations and empires, the faiths born or reshaped here, the colonial century and Partition, the monsoon calendar, and the everyday codes of food, dress and greeting.
1From the Indus to the Mughals1 min
The Indus Valley civilisation, with planned cities such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro in today's Pakistan, flourished around 2600–1900 BC. Later, Sanskrit-speaking peoples composed the Vedas, the oldest Hindu texts, in the north. Around 250 BC the emperor Ashoka ruled most of the subcontinent and spread Buddhism; his inscribed pillars and the lion capital that is now India's emblem survive.
Over the next two thousand years, dynasties rose and fell across the region: the Guptas in the north, the Cholas in the south whose navies reached Southeast Asia, Sinhalese kings at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka, and the Newar city-states of the Kathmandu Valley. Delhi Sultanates brought Islamic rule from the 13th century.
The Mughal emperors, from Babur in 1526, built the empire that left the best-known monuments: Humayun's Tomb, the Red Forts of Delhi and Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj Mahal, completed around 1653. In the same era, Rajput kingdoms built the forts and palaces of Rajasthan.

2Faiths born and reshaped here1 min
Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism all began in the subcontinent. The Buddha was born at Lumbini in today's Nepal and taught in the Ganges plain; Bodh Gaya and Sarnath near Varanasi are key pilgrim sites. Buddhism later faded in India but became the heart of Sri Lanka (Theravada) and Bhutan (Vajrayana), and survives in Nepal's Himalaya.
Islam is the faith of Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives, and of about 200 million Indians. Sufi shrines (dargahs) such as Nizamuddin in Delhi draw people of every faith for devotional music. Sikhism, founded in Punjab in the 15th century, centres on the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where the community kitchen feeds tens of thousands a day for free.
Rules at religious sites are consistent: shoes off, shoulders and knees covered, a head covering in gurdwaras and many mosques, and no leather in some Jain temples. Walk clockwise around stupas and temples. Ask before photographing rituals, and never point feet at an altar or a person.

3The Raj, Partition and new states1 min
European traders arrived from 1498, when Vasco da Gama reached Kerala. The British East India Company became a ruling power after 1757 and, after the 1857 uprising, the British Crown ruled directly. Railways, the English language, hill stations such as Shimla and Darjeeling, and cricket are part of that legacy — as are famines and the draining of wealth.
Independence in 1947 came with Partition into India and Pakistan (East and West). Up to 15 million people crossed the new borders and hundreds of thousands, possibly more, were killed. Kashmir has been disputed ever since, and India and Pakistan fought wars in 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999, with a sharp crisis again in 2025. In 1971 East Pakistan became Bangladesh after a war of independence.
Sri Lanka became independent in 1948 and endured a civil war from 1983 to 2009. Nepal was never colonised; it ended its monarchy in 2008. Bhutan kept its independence and opened to tourists only in 1974. The Maldives became independent in 1965. Borders shaped by these events still decide which crossings you can use: India–Pakistan land crossings are closed, while India–Nepal is an open border for their own citizens.

4The monsoon calendar1 min
Almost everything in South Asia runs on the monsoon. The south-west monsoon reaches Kerala around early June and sweeps north to cover most of India, Nepal and Bangladesh by July, bringing most of the year's rain by September. Before it, April to June is the hottest time of year on the plains, often above 45 °C.
Sri Lanka and south-east India also get a north-east monsoon from October to January. That is why Sri Lanka has two seasons: the south and west coasts are best from December to April, the east coast from May to September. The Maldives are warm all year, wetter from May to October.
The Himalaya adds altitude: Nepal and Bhutan are clearest in October–November and March–April, while Ladakh, in the rain shadow, is best in the monsoon months. Air pollution on the north Indian plains is worst from November to January, when crop burning and cold air trap smoke.

5Food, dress and daily codes1 min
Food changes every few hundred kilometres. North Indian cooking uses wheat breads, dairy and slow-cooked curries; the south eats rice, dosa and coconut-based dishes; Bengal and Bangladesh favour fish and mustard; Sri Lanka has rice and curry with many small dishes and hoppers; Nepal eats dal bhat twice a day; Bhutan cooks chilli as a vegetable in ema datshi. Vegetarian food is the norm in much of India; beef is avoided by most Hindus and pork by Muslims.
Eat and pass things with the right hand. In homes and many local restaurants, people eat with their fingers — wash before and after. The head wobble can mean yes, maybe or I understand; the greeting namaste or namaskar with palms together works across the region, and 'salaam' in Muslim areas.
Modest dress helps everywhere outside beach resorts: loose trousers or long skirts, covered shoulders. On local islands in the Maldives, bikinis are only for designated beaches. Bargaining is expected in markets but not in fixed-price shops; start friendly and walk away politely if the price is wrong.
