The Maldives is 1,200 islands and one international airport. Every trip is a transfer problem. Resorts run their own seaplane or speedboat pickup, sold with the room; local islands use public ferries or a guesthouse speedboat on a timetable. The trips that fail land in the afternoon and find that the seaplane has stopped for the day, or book a local island and expect a resort's rules on alcohol and swimwear. Malé arrival night, 1 night
Use this night when your flight lands after the last seaplane or ferry, or the day before a departure.
- Book the flight after the transfer: ask the property for the transfer type and time, and pick a landing that connects the same day.
- Seaplane resorts: plan to land in the morning or before early afternoon, or budget a night at a Malé or Hulhumalé hotel.
- Speedboat resorts within about an hour of Velana run evening boats on request; ask each resort for its last boat.
- Local islands: public ferries are timetabled and often do not run after dark; go the day before an international departure.

Country rules
- Seaplane transfers fly in daylight only, and the last departure is set by sunset for that day; a late landing at Velana usually means a night on land and the seaplane next morning.
- Local islands follow Islamic norms: alcohol is not sold, cover shoulders and knees in the village, and swimwear is for the designated tourist beach only.
- Submit the online Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival; airlines and immigration ask for the confirmation.
Etiquette
- Dress covered on local islands and in Malé; bikinis only on the designated tourist beach.
- No alcohol on local islands; do not bring alcohol or pork products into the country.
- Ask before photographing residents, and remove shoes at the door of homes and mosques.

- Local cafés closed by day; ferry and shop hours shorten.

Cash necessity: 3/5
- Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR); resorts bill in US dollars and add service charge and tax; US dollars are widely accepted.
- Local islands and Malé take cards at hotels and larger shops but small cafés and ferries want cash rufiyaa.
- ATMs are in Malé, Hulhumalé and a few large local islands; resorts have no public ATMs.

Safety
- Sea state matters more than distance: speedboats and public ferries are cancelled or delayed in rough weather, especially May–Oct.
- Sun and heat all year: reef-safe sunscreen, water and shade breaks; do not snorkel alone or without a guide near channels.
- Emergency: 119 police, 102 ambulance, 118 fire (confirm with your property on arrival).
- Check your own government's travel advice before you book.
