Xalapa is Veracruz's cool highland capital, 1,400 m up and about 2 hours by road from the coast. It is a university city: the anthropology museum, the Diego Rivera gallery, a strong coffee culture and markets matter more than monuments. Most travellers use it as a two-night stop between Veracruz and Puebla, or as a base for the coffee villages of Xico and Coatepec.

Getting around

The centre is walkable but hilly; taxis and ride-hailing are cheap for cross-town hops. Local buses run to the bus station and out to Coatepec and Xico. Scooter rental is common locally; check insurance and helmet before you ride.

Watch out

Safety

Xalapa is a working state capital, not a resort: use normal city sense, take taxis or ride-hailing after dark, and keep to the centre and museum areas at night.
  • Afternoon rain from June to September: carry a light rain jacket.
  • Altitude is only about 1,400 (≈ US$80) m, but the hills plus humidity tire you faster than you expect.
  • Markets are cramped and busy: keep bags in front and cash small.
  • Bus station restrooms charge a small fee; keep coins.
