San Miguel de Allende is a UNESCO-listed colonial town in the Bajío highlands, about 270 km northwest of Mexico City. It is compact, walkable and expensive by Mexican standards. Three nights covers the centro, the mirador and one day trip; two nights is enough if you only want the churches and the Jardín.

Getting around

Walk: about 90% of sights are within the centro, but streets are cobbled, narrow and steep (some 15–20° inclines). Buses (urbanos) run 07:00–21:00, flat fare, cash only. Taxis have no meters — agree the price first. Uber and Didi cover the city. Driving is best avoided: parking is scarce and streets are tight.

San Miguel is one of Mexico's safer tourist towns; the real risks are cobblestones, steep streets and taxi price games. Use official taxis or Uber/Didi, agree the fare first, and keep to lit streets at night.

  • Taxis at the bus station overcharge; walk a block and flag one on the street.
