Culiacán is the capital of Sinaloa and the historic centre of Mexican narcotics trafficking. It has a pleasant colonial core, a river malecón and a famous folk-saint chapel, but the US and other governments advise against non-essential travel to the state, and the city has seen open gun battles in its streets. Almost no guidebook covers it and it is rarely visited by tourists. Treat it as a place to avoid, not a destination.

Getting around

Culiacán is a car city: blocks are long and traffic is heavy. Uber and Didi are the practical way to move outside the centre; taxis wait on the south side of the cathedral. RedPlus runs 68 urban bus routes, but they are slow and crowded.

Safety

US and other governments advise against non-essential travel to Sinaloa. Culiacán has seen open cartel gun battles, airport closures and road blockades; kidnapping and extortion are real risks. Do not go for tourism.
  • Official advisories warn against non-essential travel to Sinaloa; cartel violence has closed the airport and blocked roads during security operations.
  • Do not photograph police, military or checkpoints, and avoid the narco cemetery Jardines del Humaya, where security staff have reportedly taken phones and cameras.
  • Toll booths and military checkpoints line Highway 15; carry ID and expect stops.
  • Summer heat is dangerous: shade temperatures reach 45 °C with heat indices of 50–55 °C.
