  • The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

  • Stand on the right on London escalators; walk on the left.
  • Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not 'England'; use the right name.

  • Scottish and Northern Irish banks issue their own sterling notes; they are legal tender in practice across the UK but are sometimes refused in England.
  • BritRail passes exist for visitors from outside the UK; compare them with advance tickets before buying.

Safety

  • Pickpockets and phone snatching (including from cyclists and scooters) in central London; keep phones away from the kerb.
  • Look right first when crossing: traffic comes from the right.
  • Highland and mountain weather turns fast; carry layers and check forecasts before hiking.
  • Rail strikes and engineering works happen; check National Rail the day before.
  • Emergency: 999 or 112.
