Ayr is a lowland coastal town in South Ayrshire, 55 minutes by train from Glasgow, and the practical base for Robert Burns' birthplace at Alloway. The town itself is a compact grid of Georgian streets behind a long sandy beach; the headline sights sit 3 km south at Alloway and 12 miles south at Culzean Castle. Most visitors come for a day, or use Ayr as a stop between Glasgow and the Stranraer ferries.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to beach is about 15 minutes on foot. Bus 57 runs hourly to Alloway (10 min). Bus 60 towards Girvan passes the Culzean Castle drive. Trains run four times an hour to Glasgow and call at Prestwick Airport. Taxis rank at the station; the area is flat and good for cycling.

Watch out

Safety

Ayr is a small, generally safe town; the real risks are coastal weather, uneven ground at castle and abbey ruins, and late-night drinkers around the town centre at weekends.
  • Summer weekends at Alloway are busy with coaches; go before 11:00.
  • Several sights are seasonal: Culzean Castle runs Apr–Oct only, and Crossraguel Abbey and the Doon Valley Railway have limited days — check before travelling.
  • The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory near Loch Doon is rebuilding after a 2021 fire; reopening date unknown.
  • Coastal weather changes fast: wind and rain even in July.
