Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Neath is a small former iron and tinplate town on the South Wales Main Line, about 40 minutes from Cardiff and 20 from Swansea. It has no headline attraction: the castle is a fragment and the abbey is a ruin. What it does have is a station, cheap beds and the lower Vale of Neath on its doorstep, so most travellers use it as a bed for the waterfalls, Aberdulais and Swansea Bay rather than as a destination.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to Victoria Gardens is about 5 minutes, and the bus station sits at Victoria Gardens. For the abbey, Aberdulais, Gnoll and the valley villages you want a car, a bike or a local bus; the waterfalls need a car park and a walk in. Trains along the South Wales Main Line cover Swansea and Port Talbot in minutes.

Waterfall Country, Pontneddfechan

go

Door to door: About 30 min drive plus 1–3 h walking

The reason most people sleep here; go early for parking.

Aberdulais Falls and tin works

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Car or local bus to Aberdulais, then a short walk

Waterwheel and falls in a small site; check opening days before you go.

Door to door: About 45 min

Train from Neath to Cardiff Central

Castle, arcades and the bay; a full day if you add the museum.

Port Talbot and Margam Country Park

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Train to Port Talbot, then taxi or a long walk

The park is the draw, not the town; a car makes this much easier.

Brecon Beacons (Pen y Fan)

caution

Door to door: About 1 h to the Storey Arms

Car via the A465 and A470

A full day with a serious hill walk; only in good weather and with proper kit.

Vale of Neath villages (Cilfrew, Aberdulais, Pontneddfechan)

Self-catering cottages and farm stays; you need a car and a taxi back if you eat out.

Watch out

Safety

Neath is a normal small Welsh town and violent crime against visitors is rare; the real risks are wet, slippery waterfall paths, fast valley roads with no pavement, and a quiet centre after about 22:00.
  • Waterfall Country paths are wet, rooty and close to drops; wear grippy shoes and do not swim in the pools.
  • Valley car parks fill by mid-morning on summer weekends and bank holidays.
  • Rural buses are sparse and stop early; check the last return before you set out.
  • Rain arrives fast off the hills — a waterproof beats an umbrella on the falls walks.
