LochbuieLocha Buidhe

Go only with a car and only for half a day: Moy Castle, the stone circle and Laggan Sands, then drive back out. No public transport, no signal, no pub.

Lochbuie is a hamlet of a few dozen people at the end of a single-track lane on the south coast of Mull, about 20 miles (32 km) from Craignure. There is a ruined 15th-century tower, a prehistoric stone circle, a tidal island and a good beach, all within a short walk. It is a half-day stop on a Mull driving day, not a base, unless you have booked one of the self-catering cottages.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

You need a car or a bike. The lane from the A849 at Inverlussa is single-track with passing places and takes about 40–50 min for the 20 miles (32 km). The village sights are all within a short walk of each other; the mausoleum is a 2-mile (3 km) hike south along the coast.

Camping above the beach

Tents only, just beyond the Old Post Office; no caravans. Check locally before pitching.

Craignure or Salen

Better base for a Mull trip; Lochbuie becomes a half-day drive from here.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, real exposure: the risks are the single-track road, fast weather changes, boggy ground at the stone circle and no phone signal. Tell someone your plan and carry water.
  • No public transport to Lochbuie: the last miles are car or bike only.
  • Mobile signal is unreliable; Vodafone may work outdoors, other networks often do not.
  • Moy Castle is unsafe to enter; view it from outside only.
  • The stone circle sits in the grounds of Lochbuie House, which is private: keep to the path.
  • Midges are severe on still, damp evenings from June to August; bring repellent.
  • Single-track road: use passing places and do not park in them.

  1. Best months: May–Jun, Sep · avoid Nov–Feb (short days, wet, midges gone but little open) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Ferry-and-road contract for Mull: Oban–Craignure and Lochaline–Fishnish sailings, last-checked times, and a fallback if the lane is closed.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: village core, Moy Castle and the shore, the stone circle and Lochbuie House path, Laggan Sands and the mausoleum.
  3. Place pages with verified access notes (Moy Castle exterior only, private house grounds, mausoleum hike) and eat pages with the Old Post Office's actual hours.
  4. Signal and weather fixtures so gates A–D can go green: midge season, single-track etiquette, no-transport warning.
