Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Thurso is mainland Scotland's northernmost town, a grid of grey stone streets between the river mouth and a working harbour at Scrabster. Most visitors are here for one reason: the 90-minute NorthLink ferry to Orkney. The rest come for cold, hollow surf, coastal walking and the empty far-north landscape. It is a practical base, not a sightseeing town, and two nights is plenty.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town centre is small enough to walk in 15 minutes. Buses 80, 82 and 73/74 link Wick, John o'Groats, Dounreay and the west coast villages, but services are thin on Sundays. A car makes the coast, Castletown and Dounreay far easier; hire is at Wick Airport, not in town.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

John o'Groats and Dunnet Head

go

Door to door: About 2 h each way by bus

Bus 80 from Thurso, about 1 h, or 25 min by car on the A836

Dunnet Head is the mainland's northernmost point; the village itself is a sign and a car park.

Wick

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus 82, about 55 min, or train via Georgemas Junction

Useful for the airport, a supermarket run and the heritage centre.

Orkney (Stromness)

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min from a Thurso bed to Stromness

NorthLink ferry from Scrabster, about 90 min, 2–3 sailings a day

Book the car lane ahead in summer; foot passengers can usually turn up.

Durness and the far north-west

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

A836 west, about 2 h by car

A Saturday bus 803 runs the route; otherwise you need a car.

Helmsdale

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Train south from Thurso, about 1 h 30 min

Only a few trains a day; check the return before you go.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Traill St and Princes St)

Walkable to shops, pubs and the railway station; best for one night without a car.

River mouth and beach front

Caravan park, sea views towards Orkney; 10–15 min walk to the centre.

Scrabster and the west edge

Choose this for an early ferry; the A9/A836 junction hotels are a 5-min drive from the terminal.

Watch out

Safety

Thurso is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are weather and terrain: cliff paths, cold water, fast-changing coastal fog and long, empty roads with no phone signal.
  • Buses are sparse, especially on Sundays; check the last service before you rely on it.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy: 4G from EE, basic signal from Three and Vodafone, nothing from O2, no 5G.
  • Coastal paths and cliff edges are unfenced and the weather turns fast; tell someone your route.
  • Dounreay is an active decommissioning site with no public tours; do not approach the perimeter.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Thurso. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Nov–Feb (short days, wind, ice) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Ferry-day contract for Scrabster: check-in cutoff, foot-passenger walk-on, taxi fallback and the last bus back from the terminal.
  2. Four walking clusters with weather anchors: town centre, river mouth and beach, Holborn Head, Scrabster.
  3. Place pages with verified hours (Old St Peter's, Castletown Heritage Centre, Wolfburn shop, North Point tours) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Storm and ferry-cancellation fixtures so the Orkney leg can go green or reroute.
