John o'Groats is a village of about 300 people on the far north coast of Caithness, and the traditional north end of the British mainland road network. The famous signpost is free and takes 20 minutes; the real reasons to come are the cliffs at Duncansby and Dunnet Head, the Castle of Mey and the ferry link to Orkney. Almost everyone passes through in a day, and one night is enough unless you are walking or cycling the length of Britain.

Getting around

The village is a few minutes on foot. Everything else — Duncansby Head, Dunnet Head, Castle of Mey, Gills Bay — needs a car or the sparse bus 80. Fuel up in Thurso or Wick before the last stretch.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are cliff edges in wind, single-track roads with passing places, and long drives on little sleep. Tell someone your route if you walk the coast path.
  • Fuel and food are limited: fill up and buy supplies in Thurso or Wick.
  • Mobile signal is patchy; only one network has coverage here, so download maps and tickets before you arrive.
  • The cliffs at Duncansby and Dunnet Head are unfenced: keep back from the edge in wind.
  • The Burwick–John o'Groats ferry stopped in 2023; check current Orkney sailings from Gills Bay or Scrabster.
  • Castle of Mey closes for a few weeks in late July–early August: check dates before you drive out.
