New Lanark is an 18th-century cotton-mill village on the River Clyde, restored and run as a visitor site, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mills, the millworkers' houses and the Falls of Clyde sit in one compact valley two miles south of Lanark. Almost everyone sees it in a half day; the only bed in the village is the Mill Hotel.

Getting around

Walk. The village is compact and car-free in practice; the main car park sits at the top of the steep hill above it. The Falls of Clyde are a short walk upstream on the Clyde Walkway.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are the steep, sometimes wet path down to the village, slippery gorge paths after rain, and low river levels making the falls less impressive than expected.
  • The hill from the main car park down to the village is steep; blue-badge parking in the village is very limited.
  • The old Lanark–New Lanark bus (Stuarts 135) has been discontinued with no replacement: plan to walk, taxi or drive.
  • The Falls of Clyde run low when the hydro station is taking water; they are best after rain or when it is offline.
  • Corra Castle is closed to visitors (bat roost).
  • Mobile signal is patchy in the valley; O2 has no coverage here.
