Lesmahagow

Skip as a base: Lesmahagow is a 2–3 hour stop off M74 junction 10 — priory foundations, a village pub, a takeaway. Sleep in Lanark or Glasgow instead.

Lesmahagow is a small Clydesdale town of about 4,300 people just off the M74, 30–45 minutes by bus from Hamilton or Lanark. Almost nothing of the medieval priory survives above its foundation course, and there is no railway station. It works as a leg-stretch, a cheap lunch or a look at the ISKCON farm temple — not as a place to spend a night unless you are on a Krishna-consciousness retreat.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The town is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. There is no railway station: reach it by Stagecoach X74 from Glasgow Buchanan (about 45 min, roughly every two hours), Whitelaws 253 from Hamilton (about 45 min, every 30 min Mon–Sat), or bus 8/258 from Lanark (about 30 min, hourly or two-hourly Mon–Sat). Cyclists use the old Carlisle Road (B7078) alongside the M74. One local taxi firm operates; book ahead.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Bus 8/258 to Lanark, then a 30-min walk or short taxi down to the mill village

The reason most people come to this part of Clydesdale: an 18th-century mill village and UNESCO site. Half a day minimum.

Door to door: About 40 min

Bus 8/258 from the village, about 30 min

Market town with the real shops, cafés and hotels; use it as your base and Lesmahagow as the stop.

Door to door: About 40 min by car

Road via the A702 or bus connections via Lanark; check current services

Small town with a museum and the usual start for the Tinto hill ascent.

Carluke

Road via the A73; check bus links

A practical stop for shops and rail, not a sight in itself.

Carstairscaution

Door to door: About 25 min by car

Road via the A70/A73; Carstairs station is on the main Glasgow–Edinburgh line

Useful mainly as a railhead, not as a destination.

Door to door: About 1 h

Stagecoach X74 from the village to Buchanan Station, about 45 min

Better as a base than a day trip: if you are here for the city, sleep in the city.

Lesmahagow village (Abbeygreen and Church Square)

The only real option is the ISKCON guest accommodation at Karuna Bhavan; the former Mason Arms is closed and for sale. Otherwise you commute in.

Lanark

About 15–20 min by road or bus 8/258; a proper town with hotels, and New Lanark on the doorstep.

Hamilton or Motherwell

Railheads on the Glasgow commuter network, 45 min by bus; use these if you want a car-free base.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are the unlit roadside walk between the M74 junction and the village, and thin late buses. Standard UK advice applies.
  • No railway station: the nearest railheads are Motherwell, Hamilton, Larkhall and Lanark, each needing a bus connection.
  • Sunday and evening buses are thin — check the last service before you commit to a late return.
  • Birkwood Castle is a derelict ruin behind fencing: do not walk in, and do not expect a visitable building.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the minor roads east and west of the M74; download maps before you leave the motorway.
