Lesmahagow
Skip as a base: Lesmahagow is a 2–3 hour stop off M74 junction 10 — priory foundations, a village pub, a takeaway. Sleep in Lanark or Glasgow instead.
Lesmahagow is a small Clydesdale town of about 4,300 people just off the M74, 30–45 minutes by bus from Hamilton or Lanark. Almost nothing of the medieval priory survives above its foundation course, and there is no railway station. It works as a leg-stretch, a cheap lunch or a look at the ISKCON farm temple — not as a place to spend a night unless you are on a Krishna-consciousness retreat.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: the nearest railheads are Motherwell, Hamilton, Larkhall and Lanark, each needing a bus connection.
- Sunday and evening buses are thin — check the last service before you commit to a late return.
- Birkwood Castle is a derelict ruin behind fencing: do not walk in, and do not expect a visitable building.
- Mobile signal is patchy on the minor roads east and west of the M74; download maps before you leave the motorway.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are the unlit roadside walk between the M74 junction and the village, and thin late buses. Standard UK advice applies.
