Dornie is a small Wester Ross village on the A87, the main road to Skye, with about 360 residents. Its one big draw is Eilean Donan Castle, a five-minute walk from the village lane. There are no shops, so most travellers use it as a quiet overnight base or a short stop between Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye bridge.

Getting around

The village lane and the castle are about five minutes apart on foot. Everything else needs the A87: buses stop at the village turnoff and at both ends of Ardelve Loop Road. A car makes Kintail, Glenelg and the falls practical; without one you are tied to two Citylink coaches a day.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are the A87 (no pavement on stretches), fast-changing Highland weather on hill routes, and having no shop or fuel nearby.
  • No shops in the village: the stores and post office have closed, so buy food in Kyle of Lochalsh.
  • Buses are few: Citylink 915 and 917 run about twice daily each way, so a missed coach can strand you.
  • Mobile signal is 4G from EE, O2 and Vodafone and 5G from Three as of 2024, but it drops on the hill routes.
  • Single-track and hill roads nearby need care in rain, ice and midge season; fill up with fuel before the last stretch.
