Skye is one island with one road loop. Portree is the only real town, with the widest choice of beds, food and fuel; Broadford and Kyleakin sit near the bridge for a first or last night; Uig is the ferry port for the Outer Hebrides; Dunvegan and Carbost anchor the west. In summer, accommodation sells out and drivers arriving without a booking have been turned back on the A87, so book before you drive.

3 nights: Portree 2 + Broadford or Kyleakin 1 on the way out, or Uig 1 if sailing to the Outer Hebrides
4 nights: Portree 3 + Dunvegan or Carbost 1 for the west without a long drive back

Skye in July and August without a booking: accommodation is block-booked by coach groups and the police have turned drivers back on the A87.
Single-track roads with passing places are the norm outside the A87, A850 and A851; overtaking on the main roads in summer is hazardous.
Fuel up before central Scotland and again in Portree; filling stations are few and far between.

Skye: Wet even by Scottish standards; rain gear matters more than a warm coat. Midges peak on still, damp evenings from late May to September. Best months are May–June and September, which are also quieter than July–August.

The tourist season runs from Easter through September; some places hibernate off-season, but Skye stays less closed than the rest of the Hebrides.
