Two small villages a mile apart on the south shore of the Black Isle, 40 min from Inverness by car. Chanonry Point, between them, is one of the best shore spots in Britain to watch bottlenose dolphins on a rising tide. Everything else — a ruined cathedral, a Pictish-stone museum, a beach, a links golf course — fits around that one hour of tide.

Getting around

Walk: Fortrose to Rosemarkie to Chanonry Point is about 30 min each leg. Bus 26 links both villages with Inverness and Cromarty, hourly Mon–Sat roughly 07:00–18:00. A car makes the Black Isle and Cromarty easy; the Nigg–Cromarty ferry (Apr–Sep) crosses the firth.

Safety

Very low crime; the real hazards are weather, wet single-track roads and tide-cut rocks at Chanonry Point. Tell someone your coastal plan and carry a waterproof.
  • Dolphins follow the incoming tide: check a tide table and arrive 1–2 h before high water, not at random.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the approach roads; download maps and tide times before you drive.
  • Many cafés and the museum close Nov–Mar or run weekends only: check before a winter trip.
  • The A832 is a single carriageway with cyclists and farm traffic; overtake only with clear sight.
