Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Inverness is the only city of any size in the Scottish Highlands and the region's transport hub, at the point where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. It has no stand-out sight of its own, but it has the beds, trains and buses that make Loch Ness, Culloden, the Black Isle and the Cairngorms reachable. Most travellers use it as a base for two or three nights rather than a destination in itself.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 20 minutes end to end, so you will rarely use a bus. Bus 3 reaches Culloden, Bus 11 the airport and Nairn, Bus 16 the east bank of Loch Ness. Taxis are plentiful but book ahead for airport and cruise-ship pickups. Bike hire suits the river and Culloden run.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

go

Door to door: About 30–45 min to Drumnadrochit

Citylink/Stagecoach 919 from the bus station, or a Jacobite cruise from the city

Bus 919 runs four times Mon–Sat, twice Sunday; check the last return before you set out.

Culloden battlefield and Clava Cairns

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Bus 3 east, or 15 min by car

Pair the battlefield with the Bronze Age cairns a short drive away.

Black Isle and Chanonry Point

go

Door to door: About 30–50 min

Bus to Fortrose and Cromarty, or car over the Kessock Bridge

Dolphins are best seen from shore at Chanonry Point as the tide turns.

Aviemore and the Cairngorms

go

Door to door: About 45 min by train

Train or Citylink bus south on the A9

Easy day for hill walks, or a stop on the way to or from Edinburgh.

Fort William and the Great Glen

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h

Citylink 919 along the A82, or the train to Glasgow

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep one night and take the Jacobite steam train.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

overnight

Door to door: About 3 h

Train from Inverness via Fort William, or drive the A82 and A830

The Jacobite steam train sells out weeks ahead in summer.

Grantown-on-Spey

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus or car south-east on the A9 and A95

Worth it only if you are already heading down Strathspey.

Kingussie

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train south to Kingussie station

A quiet stop for the Highland Folk Museum; check seasonal opening.

Fort Augustus

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Citylink 919 along the A82

Canal locks and a loch cruise; a good half-day on the way to Fort William.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (Academy Street / Castle Wynd)

Walk to the station, Victorian Market and river; best for a car-free stay.

Ness Walk and Bught

Riverside guesthouses and hotels, 10–15 min walk to the centre; quieter, near the Botanic Gardens.

Eastgate / retail park fringe

Chain hotels with parking; 20 min walk in, handy if you drive out early.

Watch out

Safety

Inverness is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are weather and distance: Highland roads, sudden mist and midges, and the last bus or train back from a day out.
  • Midges are worst near water on still evenings from June to August: bring repellent.
  • Single-track and undivided A9/A82 roads north of Perth have few safe overtaking stretches and speed cameras.
  • The Tomatin–Moy dualling on the A9 causes disruption until about 2028: allow extra time.
  • Sleeper trains do not run on Saturday night; book berths months ahead.
  • Many Highland sights, tours and boat trips close or cut hours from November to March.
