Inverness is the only city of any size in the Scottish Highlands and the region's transport hub, at the point where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. It has no stand-out sight of its own, but it has the beds, trains and buses that make Loch Ness, Culloden, the Black Isle and the Cairngorms reachable. Most travellers use it as a base for two or three nights rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 20 minutes end to end, so you will rarely use a bus. Bus 3 reaches Culloden, Bus 11 the airport and Nairn, Bus 16 the east bank of Loch Ness. Taxis are plentiful but book ahead for airport and cruise-ship pickups. Bike hire suits the river and Culloden run.

Scams and watch-outs
- Midges are worst near water on still evenings from June to August: bring repellent.
- Single-track and undivided A9/A82 roads north of Perth have few safe overtaking stretches and speed cameras.
- The Tomatin–Moy dualling on the A9 causes disruption until about 2028: allow extra time.
- Sleeper trains do not run on Saturday night; book berths months ahead.
- Many Highland sights, tours and boat trips close or cut hours from November to March.
Inverness is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are weather and distance: Highland roads, sudden mist and midges, and the last bus or train back from a day out.
