Culloden is a village 6 km east of Inverness, best known for the 1746 battle that ended the Jacobite rising. The battlefield, Clava Cairns and Cawdor Castle sit in scattered countryside with no rail station, so most visitors come by car or bus for half a day and sleep in Inverness. Two nights here only makes sense with a car and a wider Highland plan.

Getting around

You need a car or a bike. The village is on the B9006, the battlefield another 3 km southeast, and Cawdor, Clava and the viaduct are spread across side roads. Stagecoach Highland bus 27 runs hourly Mon–Sat from Inverness via Westhill to Culloden village, about 40 min. Bikes can be hired in Inverness. Sneckie Taxis in Inverness do tours of the battlefield circuit.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, fast A9 traffic, and weather that turns on the moor. Tell someone your route if you walk the battlefield circuit.
  • No railway station: the nearest is Inverness, 6 km west.
  • Bus 27 does not run on Sundays and does not serve the battlefield gate.
  • The battlefield site is free and open all year, but the visitor centre has shorter winter hours and an admission charge.
  • Midges are fierce near woodland and water from June to August; bring repellent.
  • Cawdor Castle closes outside May–September.
