Newton Stewart is a small market town on the A75 in Galloway, useful as a bed base for the Machars peninsula and Glen Trool rather than as a sight in itself. Wigtown's bookshops, two distilleries and a scatter of prehistoric and medieval sites sit within 30 minutes by car. Without a car the buses are thin and the countryside is out of reach.

Getting around

The town is walkable in about 20 minutes end to end; Dashwood Square is the bus stop. For The Machars or Glen Trool you need a car. Bus 415 runs the Machars coast roughly hourly or two-hourly Mon–Sat to Wigtown, Garlieston, Isle of Whithorn and Port William, with about four Sunday runs. Bus 420 loops the town Mon–Sat. McLeans Taxis cover short local hops.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, livestock, midges in summer and weather that turns on the hills. Tell someone your Glen Trool route and carry a paper map.
  • Bus 415 has only about four Sunday runs; plan the return or you are stranded.
  • National Express coaches from London via Newton Stewart to Stranraer have been suspended; go via Glasgow or Carlisle instead.
  • Mobile signal is 4G in town and on the A75 but drops out on the minor roads; download maps before you drive.
  • Many Machars sites are open ground with no facilities, no lighting and no shelter: take waterproofs and cash for honesty boxes.
