Livingston is a grid-planned New Town in West Lothian, 17 miles west of Edinburgh, built from 1963 and now home to about 55,800 people. Its core is two shopping centres either side of Almondvale Avenue, with over 250 chain stores. The reasons to come are practical: budget chain hotels on the M8, a fast bus and train link to Edinburgh, and a handful of sights in the surrounding villages — Cairnpapple Hill, Torphichen Preceptory, Jupiter Artland and Almond Valley. Most travellers pass through, or sleep here and day-trip into Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Getting around

The town is laid out for cars. SD Buses L1 and 9 loop through the estates hourly Monday–Saturday; a dozen taxi firms cover the rest. Two rail halts sit on the edges: Livingston North (trains to Edinburgh in 20 min, Glasgow Queen Street in 50 min) and Livingston South (Edinburgh in 30 min, Glasgow Central in about 1 h). The bus terminal on Almondvale Avenue is the practical hub for Edinburgh services.

Safety

A low-risk town by UK standards; the real issues are weather, unlit rural lanes at night and the two outlying rail halts after dark. Standard UK advice applies: 999 for emergencies, 101 for non-urgent police.
  • Two railway stations, neither central: check which one your train uses before booking a hotel.
  • The shopping centres are chain stores and empty units; do not plan a day around them.
  • Cairnpapple Hill and Torphichen Preceptory have seasonal opening only — check before travelling.
  • Jupiter Artland opens May–September only and charges separately for dogs.
  • Rural sights such as Cairnpapple have no bus service; you need a car, bike or taxi.
