Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

North Queensferry is a small Fife village under the Forth bridges, 20 minutes by train from Edinburgh. Three bridges cross the water here: the 1890 rail bridge, the 1964 road bridge you can walk across, and the 2017 Queensferry Crossing. The village itself is quiet, with an aquarium, a tiny lighthouse and the Fife Coastal Path. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop or a single night between Edinburgh and Fife.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The village is small and walkable. Inverkeithing is a two-mile walk over the ridge, fine in dry weather. Stagecoach Bus 89 runs hourly Monday–Saturday from Dunfermline via Inverkeithing and Ferrytoll park-and-ride, about 40 min; Bay Travel Bus 87 takes about 70 min on a longer loop. Bus 7B/7D runs every 30–60 min on Sundays, with only some 7D journeys entering the village. Taxis are available locally and know the airport run.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Train from North Queensferry via Inverkeithing, or Bus 89

Abbey ruins and Andrew Carnegie's birthplace; a half day.

Door to door: About 20 min to Haymarket, 30 min to Waverley

Train every 30 min via Haymarket

The obvious base; North Queensferry works as a quiet alternative.

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train to Leuchars via Inverkeithing, then bus

Full day; cathedral, castle and golf links.

Anstruthercaution

Door to door: About 2 h

Train to Leuchars or Kirkcaldy, then bus along the coast

Better as a Fife coast day with a car.

Kirkcaldycaution

Door to door: About 45 min

Train via Inverkeithing

Mostly a transport stop; the coast east of it is industrial.

Glenrothes

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train to Markinch, then bus

Use it for Falkland Palace, not the town itself.

Burntisland

go

Door to door: About 50 min

Train via Inverkeithing and Kirkcaldy

Small coastal town with a beach and a heritage railway.

Leven

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train to Markinch or Kirkcaldy, then bus

Long for a day trip without a car.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

North Queensferry village

One hotel and a few guesthouses; walkable to the bridge path, station and aquarium.

Inverkeithing

Two miles north, a bigger transport hub with more trains and cheaper rooms; walk over the ridge or take a bus.

South Queensferry

Across the road bridge in Edinburgh; historic pubs and more choice, but you cross the water each day.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are wind on the bridge footpaths, unlit paths after dark and fast traffic on the A9000 (≈ US$12,000) approach.
  • The Forth Road Bridge footpath closes in high winds and sometimes for maintenance; use the west-side path when the east side is shut.
  • North Queensferry station is unstaffed: buy your ticket from the machine before boarding.
  • The village has no pub and few places to eat in the evening; check kitchen hours before you rely on them.
  • Inchgarvie island under the rail bridge is uninhabited and has no access.
