Give Falkirk one full day for the Wheel and the Kelpies, two nights if you want Callendar House and the Antonine Wall; it is a stop, not a base.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Falkirk is a central-belt town between Edinburgh and Glasgow, 30 minutes by train from Edinburgh, and its two headline sights — the Falkirk Wheel boat lift and the Kelpies sculptures — sit outside the centre. The town itself is small and walkable, with a museum, a clocktower and Roman earthworks nearby. Most travellers see it as a day trip or a single overnight on the Edinburgh–Glasgow line.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. The Wheel is 4 km west of the centre: bus 6 runs there about every 30 min, or walk the canal towpath, which passes Falkirk High station. The Kelpies are about 2 km northeast of the centre near the M9. Trains link Falkirk High and Falkirk Grahamston with Edinburgh and Glasgow; taxis rank on Lower Newmarket Street.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Stirling

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Small cathedral town; combine with Stirling in one day.

Callander

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min (check)

Gateway to the Trossachs; the bus leg is slow, so go early.

Train to Stirling or Alloa, then bus

Dollar Glen and Castle Campbell; check bus times before you set out.

Crianlarich

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h 30 min

Train to Stirling, then the West Highland Line

Too far for a return day; sleep over if you are heading for the Highlands.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Falkirk town centre

Most central; walk to the High Street, Grahamston station and buses. Few hotels, so book ahead.

Grahamston and the north side

Around Central Retail Park and Grahamston station; handy for the M9 and the Kelpies.

Polmont / M9 junction 5

Chain hotels clustered by the motorway, east of town (distance approximate); needs a car or bus into town.

Watch out

Safety

A low-risk town; the real issues are rain, dark canal towpaths after dusk and uneven ground at the Roman earthworks. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • Two stations: Falkirk High has the fast Edinburgh–Glasgow trains but is on the south edge; Falkirk Grahamston is central but on the slower loop.
  • The canal below the Wheel to Grangemouth is closed to boats until June 2026 for lock repairs; towpath disruption is likely.
  • Check current opening days before travelling — the Wheel's hours vary by season.
  • Weather changes fast; carry a waterproof even on a bright morning.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Falkirk. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Dec–Feb (short daylight, cold, rain) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for EDI and GLA: last tram and train times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: town centre and the Steeple, Callendar Park, the Wheel and Rough Castle, the Kelpies.
  3. Place pages with verified opening days (Wheel, Callendar House, the Pineapple) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Canal-closure fixture for the Wheel–Grangemouth stretch so the page can flag towpath disruption until June 2026.
