Rhosneigr

Go for 2 nights if you want beach, wind and quiet; skip as a day trip from further than Holyhead or Bangor — the train drops you 1 km (0.6 mi) from the sand.

Rhosneigr is a small village on the west coast of Anglesey with a rail station on the Holyhead line, a broad sandy beach and steady wind that makes it one of Wales's better kitesurf and windsurf spots. There is no sightseeing list here: you come for two or three nights of beach, coastal walking and one or two meals, and you need a car or a bike to reach the rest of the island.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The village is walkable: station to beach is about 1 km, 12–15 min. Buses 25 (Holyhead, Aberffraw) and 45 (Llangefni) cover the island slowly; the train runs along the coast to Holyhead and inland to Bangor, Llandudno Junction and Crewe. For beaches, the race circuit and Barclodiad y Gawres, a car or a rented bike is the practical choice.

Holyhead and South Stack

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train from Rhosneigr to Holyhead, about 15 min, then a car or taxi to South Stack

South Stack cliffs are the bird reserve; the last stretch has no bus — book a taxi or drive.

Llangefni

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Bus 45, about 40 min

Market town with a gallery and shops; useful on a wet day, not a highlight.

Door to door: About 40 min

Car via the A55 and A545, about 35 min

Castle, pier and a proper town for a half day; hard by bus.

Door to door: About 45 min

Train toward Bangor, about 30 min, then a short walk

The sign and a shop; 30 minutes is enough.

Menai Bridge

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train to Bangor then bus, or car via the A55

Good for the strait views and a meal; combine with Beaumaris.

Benllech

go

Door to door: About 35 min

Car via the A5025, about 30 min

Another sandy beach with easier parking and more cafés.

Station Road and the north side

Closest to the rail station and the golf course; 10–15 min walk to the sand.

Ty Croes and Llanfaelog

Inland hamlets with cottages and the race circuit; you need a car.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the sea, the wind and unlit lanes at night. Swim near lifeguards in season, check tides, and carry a light if you walk back from the pub.
  • The rail station is about 1 km (0.6 mi) from the beach: no taxi rank, so plan the walk with bags.
  • Sea conditions change fast on this coast; swim between the flags and check tide times.
  • Many cafés and restaurants close or cut hours outside Easter–October: check before you build a day around one.
  • Mobile signal is patchy in the lanes behind the village.
